A Study on the Reflectance Characteristics of Spectacle Multilayer with Mixed Coherence and Incoherence

Abstract
Purpose: The reflectance characteristics of a spectacle multilayer with mixed coherence and incoherence were studied.

Methods: Spectacle multilayers with mixed coherence and incoherence were designed in an optical design program using the optical constants of SiO2, ZrO2 and hard-coating films, and the reflectance due to the difference in refractive index between the hard material and the spectacle lens and the reflectance according to incident angle were observed.

Results: The reflectance of the spectacle substrate and hard film was caused by some periodic oscillation due to the partial coherence of the hard coating layer. The reflectance of the spectacle lens with mixed coherence and incoherence was slightly smaller than twice the reflectance designed only on one side. As the difference in refractive index between the hard material and the spectacle substrate increased, the reflectance increased. The phenomenon of reflectance in TM mode was closely related to the Brewster angle, and the reflectance of non-polarized light took the average value of the reflectance of TM mode and TE mode.

Conclusions: The spectacle multilayer should be considered on both sides, and the with mixed coherence and incoherence should be used to calculate the correct reflectance of the spectacle lens.
